ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER (Temporary Job Opening)
Organizational Context
This position is within the Trade Analysis Branch of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities. The Economic Affairs Officer reports directly to the Head of the Branch, contributing to the branch's analytical and technical cooperation activities.
Job Purpose
The Economic Affairs Officer's purpose is to conduct economic and sector analysis, contributing to UNCTAD's work on trade and economic development. This involves developing socio-economic databases, applying econometric models to analyze trends and policy impacts, and drafting analytical studies. The role also supports technical cooperation by participating in missions, organizing training, and preparing project documentation. The officer will collect information from international meetings and assist senior staff with presentations, ultimately supporting the branch's mandate in trade and development research and policy advice.
Responsibilities
The Economic Affairs Officer is responsible for conducting economic and sector analysis, which includes developing socio-economic databases, interpreting and applying econometric models for trend analysis, and drafting technical papers on trade and economic development. The role involves identifying and analyzing policy proposals, attending international meetings to gather information, and assisting in the organization of expert group meetings and seminars. Additionally, the officer will prepare speeches and presentations for senior staff. In technical cooperation, responsibilities include participating in missions, organizing training for national experts, preparing project documentation, and monitoring project implementation. General duties encompass performing other related tasks and administrative duties as required.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, or applying economic principles in development programs is required. Desirable experience includes working with international trade data, non-tariff measures, quantitative analysis using econometric methods and statistical packages, and at least two years in project management and administration.
Skills
Professionalism in applying economic theories, conducting research, and data analysis. Strong communication skills for effective speaking and writing. Proficiency in Planning & Organizing, including goal setting, prioritization, and time management. Ability to work under pressure and maintain professional demeanor.
