Intern : Risk Management and Peacebuilding Section Internship
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its Disasters and Conflicts Branch works with partners to promote sustainable natural resource management in conflict and disaster-affected countries, linking environmental management to peacebuilding and disaster risk reduction. The Risk Management and Peacebuilding Section (RMPB) specifically supports Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) and Climate, Peace and Security (CPS) approaches.
Job Purpose
This internship within UNEP's Risk Management and Peacebuilding Section (RMPB) in Nairobi, Kenya, offers a six-month opportunity to support programmatic, evaluative, communications, and outreach activities. The intern will contribute to the section's portfolio by assisting with the development of communication materials, managing digital platforms, and supporting research for concept notes and programme documents. The role aims to enhance the section's engagement with stakeholders and promote Eco-DRR and CPS approaches, ultimately contributing to enhanced disaster and climate resilience for peace. The intern will gain practical experience in environmental policy, disaster risk reduction, and peacebuilding initiatives within a UN context.
Responsibilities
Support the day-to-day management and operations of the RMPB Section, including updating and maintaining project communication materials in electronic filing systems. Manage and monitor content management systems, social media databases, and online accounts. Assist in implementing the section's communication strategy, particularly through social media and newsletters, and develop weekly newsletters on relevant topics. Provide content creation support for social media channels and contribute ideas to increase audience engagement. Support the development and maintenance of the RMPB Section website. Assist in developing programmatic content, conducting background research for concept notes, and supporting climate security risk assessments. Help organize and execute events, such as webinars and conference side events, including drafting agendas, invitations, and minutes. Support monitoring, evaluation, data collection, and analysis, including data visualization for informed decision-making and reporting. Assist with any other research and communication tasks as required.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a strong interest and familiarity with social media and online communication tools are necessary. Experience with web content management systems and graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Suite, Canva) is considered an asset.
Skills
