Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) globally leads and supports the UN Security Management System, enabling UN operations in challenging environments. Job Purpose
The Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO) supports the Chief Security Adviser (CSA) in forecasting security environments and UN responses, developing risk management strategies, and ensuring security is integrated into all UN activities. The role involves analyzing threats, preparing security plans, advising managers, and facilitating program delivery through operational assistance. The FSCO enhances communication and trust with stakeholders, builds capacity through training, conducts assessments, and supports contingency planning. This position contributes to organizational resilience and the effective, safe delivery of UN mandates by managing security projects, monitoring compliance, and fostering collaboration.
Responsibilities
The Field Security Coordination Officer provides substantive input for security environment forecasting and UN operational responses, utilizing analytical techniques and research to enhance security programs. Responsibilities include developing risk management strategies, planning based on situational awareness, and analyzing multi-dimensional threats. The role involves preparing and implementing security plans and risk management documents, analyzing security trends, and reporting incidents. The FSCO advises on integrating security into UN activities, supports line managers, and enables mandate delivery through operational assistance. Key duties also include managing security-related projects, monitoring preparedness and compliance, enhancing communication with stakeholders, and collaborating with various entities to stay informed of threats. Additionally, the role involves strengthening personnel capacity through training, conducting security surveys and assessments, supporting contingency and crisis planning, and assisting with communication systems and logistical planning.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in security, risk management, emergency preparedness, or related fields is required. Desirable experience includes planning and implementing risk mitigation measures, field operations, international experience, security program analysis, and utilizing data analytics for decision-making.
