Civic Space Intern
Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva is responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms, enhancing equality, combating impunity, integrating human rights in development, widening democratic space, and protecting human rights. This internship is with the Civic Space Unit within the Rule of Law, Accountability and Civic Space Branch.
Job Purpose
This international internship with the Civic Space Unit aims to support OHCHR's mandate to enhance participation and protect civic space, a key pillar of its Management Plan. The role contributes to initiatives focused on protecting Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), engaging strategically with civic space actors, monitoring civic space trends, mainstreaming civic space within the UN system, and building public support for HRDs. The intern will assist in developing protection practices, increasing visibility for HRDs' work, monitoring trends, and integrating civic space considerations into UN policies and operations, thereby supporting global efforts to safeguard fundamental freedoms and democratic principles.
Responsibilities
The Civic Space Unit focuses on five priority areas: supporting regional and in-country initiatives to protect Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) by mapping protection practices and facilitating pilot projects; engaging strategically with civic space actors to develop coordinated responses to threats; monitoring civic space trends and the situation of HRDs, including SDG16 indicators; mainstreaming civic space and protection work within the UN system through policy mapping and support to country teams; and building public support for civic space and HRDs by increasing visibility and facilitating pathways for business support. The role involves contributing to the development of protection networks, raising awareness, monitoring trends, and integrating civic space into UN policies and operations.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship program. The focus is on academic background and potential to contribute to the Civic Space Unit's objectives.
Skills
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage. Skills related to law, political science, international relations, or social sciences are preferred.
