Job Purpose
This legal internship within the Office of the President of the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals provides interns with hands-on experience in international criminal law. The role is designed to support the President's judicial and administrative functions, offering exposure to complex legal research, document drafting, and reporting. Interns will contribute to the smooth operation of the Mechanism by assisting with various legal tasks, thereby gaining valuable insights into international justice mechanisms and the UN system. The internship aims to foster professional development in a dynamic legal environment.
Responsibilities
Interns will support the mandated functions of the President of the Mechanism. Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive legal research on complex international law matters. They will assist in drafting and proofreading judicial documents such as decisions and orders. Additionally, interns will help prepare reports for the UN Security Council and General Assembly, and analyze relevant laws, rules, and policies. Other duties involve assisting in the drafting of speeches and official correspondence, providing support on press and policy matters, and aiding in the management, retention, and disposition of records. Routine tasks like compiling materials may also be assigned.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, candidates must have a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship for which they are applying.
Skills
Legal research, drafting and proofreading judicial documents, report preparation, legal analysis, drafting speeches and correspondence, press and policy support, records management, fluency in English, working knowledge of French (desirable), knowledge of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian or Kinyarwanda (advantage).
