Organizational Context
The United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), specifically the Office of the President, is seeking legal interns in Arusha, Tanzania. This internship offers a comprehensive experience within the IRMCT's mandated functions, providing exposure to international criminal law and judicial processes.
Job Purpose
This legal internship within the Office of the President of the IRMCT aims to provide interns with practical experience in international criminal law. Interns will support the President's mandated functions by conducting legal research, assisting in drafting judicial documents and reports, analyzing legal frameworks, and supporting policy and press matters. The role contributes to the efficient operation of the Mechanism and offers a valuable learning opportunity in a unique international judicial setting. The internship duration is typically three to six months, with a preference for the longer period to ensure a thorough experience.
Responsibilities
Interns will conduct comprehensive legal research on complex international law matters. They will assist in drafting and proofreading judicial decisions, orders, and other legal documents. Responsibilities include supporting the preparation of reports for the UN Security Council and General Assembly. Interns will analyze relevant laws, rules, and policies pertinent to the Mechanism's work. Additionally, they will assist in drafting speeches and official correspondence, provide support on press and policy issues, and aid in the management, retention, and disposition of case records. Routine tasks such as compiling materials may also be assigned.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, candidates must have a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship they are applying for. The focus is on academic background and relevant coursework rather than prior employment.

Legal research, drafting judicial documents, legal analysis, report preparation, speech writing, official correspondence, press and policy support, records management, fluency in English, working knowledge of French (desirable).
