DDR Programme Support Intern
Organizational Context
The Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Branch, within the UN Secretariat's Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO), provides essential planning and operational support for DDR processes in peacekeeping missions and special political missions globally. The Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office (PBPSO) strengthens the UN's capacity to prevent conflict and sustain peace across the entire conflict continuum.
Job Purpose
This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience within the UN Secretariat's DDR Branch, contributing to critical peacebuilding efforts. The intern will support the Branch's mandate by assisting in research, drafting documents, organizing events, and disseminating information related to DDR processes. This role is designed to provide valuable exposure to international peace operations and conflict prevention, enabling the intern to develop professional skills while contributing to the UN's mission of sustaining peace and preventing conflict across various global settings.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide crucial support to the DDR Branch's operations. Key duties include assisting in the drafting of briefing notes, reports, and internal documents. The role involves conducting research on current DDR developments in assigned countries and supporting the organization of events, conferences, and meetings. Additionally, the intern will contribute to the Inter-Agency Working Group on DDR, assist in developing communication materials, and maintain fact sheets and information repositories on peacekeeping missions. Attending relevant conferences and meetings, providing briefings, and assisting with administrative tasks are also integral parts of the role, ensuring comprehensive support to the Branch's activities.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must be students in the final year of a university degree program (bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D.) or have completed such a program. A field of study relevant to the internship is necessary.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams). Ability to draft news articles and social media posts is desirable. Experience in designing surveys and polls is also desirable. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
