The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), through its Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG), supports the UN Secretariat's work on the 2030 Agenda. DSDG provides substantive support and capacity-building for SDG implementation, focusing on areas like urbanization and climate action. This role supports DSDG's efforts in analyzing SDG localization.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide crucial evidence to inform upcoming discussions on the 2027 SDG Summit and the post-2030 development framework. The role will analyze how SDG localization has advanced the Sustainable Development Goals and UN DESA's work in this domain. The findings will contribute to understanding the impact of local and regional authorities in translating the global development vision into tangible results on the ground, reinforcing Member States' commitment to localization and multilevel governance approaches for accelerated SDG implementation.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to conduct evidence-based research and analysis to support the development of analytical materials on SDG localization. This includes analyzing best practices in accelerating SDG implementation through localization, drawing on inter-governmental and analytical work. The role will also update UN DESA’s localization guidance materials, such as the Global Guiding Elements on Voluntary Local Reviews, based on project experiences and recent guidance. Additionally, the contractor will engage with the Local2030 Coalition Task Force to analyze and map existing UN system capacity-building materials on SDG localization, identifying gaps and opportunities. The role also involves supporting the organization of the International Mayors Forum and providing technical cooperation to national consultants working on SDG acceleration through localization.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience is required in areas such as national development planning, local development research, sustainable development, localization analysis, data visualization, and principles of effective governance for sustainable development. Previous experience with the United Nations or its agencies is desirable.
Skills
Strong analytical and communication skills, ability for teamwork, excellent oral and written communication in English. Familiarity with VNR/VLR processes and SDGs. Experience with the UN is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
