Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) aims to deliver impactful ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa, aligning with the 2030 SDGs and Agenda 2063. This Graphic Design Assistant role is situated within the Publications & Conference Management Section (PCMS) of the Administration and Conference Management Division (ACMD) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Job Purpose
The Graphic Design Assistant supports the Publications Unit by participating in client meetings to define design project requirements, including content, objectives, media, and technical specifications. The role involves independently undertaking design assignments for UN activities, conceptualizing and developing design proposals, and creating infographics and data visualizations to communicate complex information clearly. The assistant is responsible for preparing approved designs for final review and printing, reviewing proofs, and providing project support. This includes coordinating with clients and production staff to ensure timely project completion, assisting with data analysis and presentation, and updating information materials like web pages and brochures.
Responsibilities
Participate in initial client meetings to discuss design project scope, objectives, media, technical specifications, costs, and deadlines. Independently undertake design assignments for UN activities, developing creative design proposals with photographic, illustrative, or abstract graphic solutions. Design and produce infographics and data visualizations for clear and engaging communication of complex information. Prepare approved designs in electronic format for final review and printing, and review color and print proofs. Provide guidance and support throughout the production process, coordinating with clients and relevant parties to ensure projects stay on schedule. Assist with data collection, analysis, and preparation of presentations and reports. Support the visualization and updating of information materials such as web pages and brochures. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in publications production, graphic design, and layout is required. This is reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Proficiency in professional graphic design and publishing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud) is essential. One year or more of experience in data analytics is desirable.

Professionalism in graphic design and production processes; knowledge of desktop publishing, layout, and printing; ability to develop creative designs for print media; proficiency in graphic design software; ability to manage multiple projects; creativity and problem-solving; client orientation; data analysis and visualization skills.
