UN Secretariat
United Nations Human Settlements Programme
Analista de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG)
Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development globally. This role supports the "Local Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean" project, focusing on Mesoamerica. The position is based in Mexico City and contributes to strengthening geospatial capacity across various UN-Habitat initiatives in the region.
Job Purpose
The GIS Analyst will provide substantive support to the "Local Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean" project, focusing on data generation and risk mapping for urban solutions. This includes producing threat cartography, risk inventories, and standardized geodatabases for eight intervention cities across Mesoamerica (El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Cuba). The role also involves creating spatial analyses for urban planning instruments and cartographic products for urban solutions guidance. Additionally, the analyst will strengthen cross-cutting geospatial capacity for other UN-Habitat Mesoamerica office projects, ensuring flexible time allocation based on operational priorities.
Responsibilities
The GIS Analyst will be responsible for generating geospatial information and technical cartography for the disaster risk reduction project in Mesoamerica, as well as providing transversal geospatial support to the UN-Habitat Mexico office's portfolio. Key duties include producing threat cartography (seismic, hydrometeorological, geomorphological, anthropic) for eight intervention cities, processing and integrating geospatial data from national and local sources, and performing spatial analyses for exposure and susceptibility. The role involves supporting the construction of risk inventories, designing and populating visualization platforms, and producing cartography for Integral Urban Operations and urban planning instruments. The analyst will also contribute to capacity-building activities, coordinate with national GIS systems, and conduct field missions as needed.
Work Experience
A minimum of four years of professional experience in geographic information systems, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and/or digital cartography is required. Proven experience in producing threat, vulnerability, and/or disaster risk cartography is essential. Experience in building geodatabases, standardizing geospatial information, and creating metadata is also necessary.
Skills
Advanced proficiency in desktop GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS). Experience with web map services and interactive dashboards. Knowledge of programming for GIS (Python, ArcPy, GeoPandas) and spatial databases (PostgreSQL/PostGIS) is highly valued. Familiarity with global development agendas (Agenda 2030, New Urban Agenda, Sendai Framework) is desirable.
