Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), specifically its Chemicals and Health Branch within the Industry and Economy Division, is the leading global environmental authority. This role, based in Geneva, supports the implementation of the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) and contributes to informed decision-making on chemical and waste management through data analysis and indicator development.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to develop and operationalize a scientifically robust and policy-relevant proposal for the global environmental burden high-level indicator (HLI). The role involves methodological development, data validation, piloting, and stakeholder engagement to ensure the HLI is ready for submission to the first International Conference of the GFC. The consultant will also provide technical contributions to related workstreams within the GFC's measurability structure, supporting informed decision-making on chemicals and waste management globally.
Responsibilities
The consultant will lead the consolidation, validation, and analysis of data for the global environmental burden HLI. Responsibilities include coordinating activities for HLI development and piloting, refining its methodological framework, and engaging with partners and stakeholders. The role involves facilitating task force work, preparing technical documentation, and developing/revising the HLI proposal for conference submission. Additionally, the consultant will provide technical expertise to related GFC measurability workstreams and present ongoing work in relevant meetings.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional experience in chemicals, waste management, socio-economic research, data analysis, or data science is required. Experience in knowledge management, data collection/analysis, and developing indicators or monitoring frameworks is essential. Experience with composite indicators and in international settings is desirable.
Skills
Proficient computer skills, including knowledge management and data visualization tools. Expertise in data collection and analysis methods. Strong communication skills. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
