Organizational Context
The internship is within the Data Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna. DASS is responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing international data on illicit drugs and crime to produce estimates for flagship publications and mandated reports, supporting the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting within the field of international crime and drug statistics. The intern will support the Data Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS) in its mandate to produce evidence-based knowledge. This involves assisting with data processing, trend analysis, research, and the preparation of statistical products for UNODC reports and studies. The role contributes to UNODC's efforts in understanding and addressing global drug and crime issues through data-driven insights and supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
Responsibilities
Assist in background research and review of data collection instruments and methodological guidelines. Support the analysis of trends in time-series data on drugs and crime using internal and external databases. Collect information from various sources, conduct research, and aid in preparing statistical products for UNODC reports, documents, and regional studies. Help organize international workshops and meetings related to drug and crime data. Undertake other relevant assignments as required to support the section's objectives.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Some experience in research on crime, drugs, or a comparable study area would be considered an asset.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications; working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is essential. Knowledge of R, Python, Stata, and MS Access is desirable. Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and its ideals. Ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
