Environmental AMR Specialist in Tunisia
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Africa supports countries in environmental management, including addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within a One Health framework. This role supports a project in Tunisia focused on the environmental dimension of AMR, aiming to reduce pollution and improve waste management to build resilience against AMR.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide crucial technical expertise to national stakeholders in Tunisia for the implementation of the Tunisian National Action Plan on AMR, using a One Health approach. The role will focus on the environmental dimension of AMR, generating, analyzing, and interpreting data on resistance and consumption patterns in the environment. The ultimate goal is to support the development of a clear and actionable roadmap for Tunisia to address the causes, drivers, and pathways of AMR, contributing to global efforts to combat this threat.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide technical support for key project outputs, including curating, analyzing, and compiling knowledge on AMR causes, drivers, and pathways in Tunisia. This involves developing a work plan, conducting field surveys to identify resistant germs in various environmental samples (e.g., wastewater, water bodies, manure), and compiling current knowledge on environmental contamination. The role also includes providing technical input and advice for national AMR management, elaborating a diagnostic report, identifying knowledge gaps, and developing an actionable roadmap. Additionally, the consultant will be responsible for communicating and disseminating compiled knowledge through participation in and leading discussions at national workshops.
Work Experience
Two years of relevant professional experience in environmental policy, public health, or a related field is required. Proven experience working on antimicrobial resistance, with a focus on environmental determinants (pollution, chemical, waste, wastewater), is essential. Experience providing technical and policy support in multidisciplinary and multisectoral contexts at global, regional, or national levels is also required.
