FIELD SECURITY COORDINATION OFFICER
Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN Security Management System. It enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programs in challenging environments. This role, based in Kosti, Sudan, reports to the Chief Security Adviser and offers valuable experience in a dynamic organization contributing to peace and security.
Job Purpose
The Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO) supports the UN's security and operational responses by forecasting evolving security environments and developing risk management strategies. This role involves analyzing threats, planning security measures, and advising on the integration of security into all UN activities and programs. The FSCO will collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure alignment and support for security operations, enhance communication, and strengthen security awareness and capacity. The position also contributes to organizational resilience, contingency planning, and the development of security communication systems, ultimately enabling the effective delivery of UN mandates and programs.
Responsibilities
The Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO) provides substantive input for forecasting security environments and UN responses, supporting planning and program adjustments. Responsibilities include developing risk management strategies, analyzing threats, and preparing security planning documents. The role involves advising on security integration in UN activities, supporting line managers, and enabling program delivery through operational assistance. The FSCO will manage security-related projects, monitor preparedness and compliance, and enhance communication with stakeholders. Collaboration with diverse groups, including NGOs and government representatives, is key to understanding UN objectives and emerging threats. The position also involves strengthening security awareness through training, conducting security surveys, supporting contingency planning, and managing security communication systems. Financial and logistical planning, resource mobilization, and performance management of security personnel are also included, alongside implementing gender, diversity, and inclusion approaches.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in security, risk management, or emergency preparedness is required. This includes experience in planning, implementing, and reviewing risk mitigation measures, specialized experience in security programs and analysis, and using data analytics for decision-making. Experience supporting humanitarian agencies is also required. International experience and field operations experience are desirable.
