REDD+ Safeguards and Knowledge Management Specialist
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) addresses deforestation and climate challenges by providing technical support on safeguards, financial innovation, and knowledge management. This role, based in Panama City, strengthens UNEP's contribution to the UN-REDD Programme, Results-Based Payments, and regional restoration efforts.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to bolster UNEP's Nature and Market-based Solutions Section by providing specialized technical expertise in REDD+ safeguards and knowledge management within the LAC region. The role will offer strategic input on safeguards coordination, integrating non-carbon benefits (NCBs) into REDD+ and nature-based solutions, and coordinating the UN-REDD Safeguards and Integrity Working Group for LAC. The consultant will collaborate closely with the UNEP LAC team, contributing technical input, knowledge sharing, advocacy, and communication efforts to advance REDD+ processes in LAC countries, ultimately strengthening UNEP's regional impact and support for sustainable development.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide technical expertise for updating the Safeguards Information System (SIS) in LAC, including assessment and design proposals. Responsibilities include contributing to the operationalization of safeguards instruments for UN-REDD and Results-Based Payments (RBP) initiatives. The role involves delivering technical assistance on non-carbon benefits (NCBs) in Mexico, focusing on integrating NCBs into national SIS. Additionally, the consultant will participate in coordinating, planning, and delivering sessions for the UN-REDD Safeguards and Integrity Working Group for LAC, facilitating knowledge exchange and documenting outcomes. The consultant will also contribute to technical reports, policy briefs, and knowledge products, and provide input for workshops and webinars.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in environment, natural resources, climate change, or sustainable development is required. Experience with REDD+ and/or environmental and social safeguards is desired. Experience coordinating regional working groups, knowledge exchange platforms, or capacity-building processes, as well as working with UN agencies or international cooperation projects, is also desirable.
