Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the UN system's entity for addressing global and regional environmental issues. Its mandate includes coordinating environmental policy, monitoring the global environment, and alerting governments to emerging issues. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office in Panama City supports 33 countries, focusing on sustainable development through policy-relevant environmental analysis and data.
Job Purpose
This internship supports UNEP's Science-Policy Unit within the Latin America and the Caribbean Office. The role contributes to the 'Environment under Review' Subprogramme by providing research and administrative support to expand its quality and scope. The intern will assist in implementing the biennial workplan, coordinating information exchange with the Regional Environmental Information Network (REIN), and following up with countries on SDG indicators. The position aims to enhance the unit's capacity to deliver timely, credible environmental analyses and data for decision-making and action planning in the region.
Responsibilities
Provide general support for the implementation of the Science-Policy Subprogramme's biennial workplan. Ensure smooth coordination and regular information exchange with focal points of UNEP's Regional Environmental Information Network (REIN) through communication, meeting support, and facilitation. Follow up with countries on the production of SDG indicators where UNEP is the custodian agency. Support the continuous updating and data enrichment of UNEP's regional data platform. Conduct secondary data research to aid in developing concept notes, proposals, policy briefs, and activities. Assist in preparing communications pieces, technical briefing notes, news items, draft reports, and publications. Support the initial phase of new projects as required. Assist in organizing meetings, training sessions, and workshops. Undertake other related tasks as requested by staff members.
Work Experience
No prior professional work experience is required for this internship. However, candidates are expected to demonstrate relevant academic background or coursework in environmental research, data analysis, statistical methods, or programming. Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) and mapping skills is desirable.
