Study - Conservation priorities for sharks and rays in Oceania
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) supports the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) Secretariat, which administers various international agreements. This consultancy operates under the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MOU), focusing on species conservation within the Oceania region.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to develop a comprehensive prioritization of conservation activities for specific shark and ray species listed under the Sharks MOU Annex 1 in the Oceania region. The output will provide Signatory countries with actionable, science-based recommendations to guide effective conservation efforts. The study will align with the existing Conservation Plan and Programme of Work of the Sharks MOU, utilizing established methodologies to identify priority species and conservation actions. The ultimate goal is to contribute to achieving and maintaining a favorable conservation status for these migratory sharks and rays.
Responsibilities
The consultant will develop an inception report detailing project steps, timelines, and risks. They will apply a specified methodology to identify priority species and conservation actions for sharks and rays in the Oceania region, potentially subdividing the region. Assessments may include vulnerability and risk analyses where data permits. A draft consultation report will be prepared, outlining regional priorities and aligning with the Sharks MOU Conservation Plan. The consultant will also develop regional species fact sheets and engage with stakeholders for feedback. Finally, they will consolidate comments into a final report with recommendations for priority actions, considering all aspects of the Sharks MOU Conservation Plan, and suggest future methodological improvements.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive professional experience in conservation planning, project management, and international conservation policy is required. This must include substantial experience with shark and ray conservation, assessing their needs, and formulating conservation measures. Knowledge of Oceania's conservation priorities is also necessary.
