SECURITY COORDINATION OFFICER
Organizational Context
This position is based in Mogadishu with the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) leads and oversees the UN security management system. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Principal Security Adviser, under the overall management of the Principal Security Adviser.
Job Purpose
The Security Coordination Officer is responsible for reviewing and monitoring security plan preparation, development, and implementation for the Mission. This role involves advising the Head of Mission on security matters, participating in policy development, and establishing communication with security focal points and other agencies to ensure coordination. The officer maintains awareness of local security conditions, identifies threats, and advises UN staff on preventative measures. Responsibilities also include establishing evacuation capabilities, evaluating physical and fire safety measures, providing residential security advice, coordinating with local authorities for disaster response, ensuring emergency communication systems function, supervising investigations, managing guard forces, arranging protection details, and conducting security training.
Responsibilities

The officer advises the Head of Mission on security matters, contributes to security operations policies, and establishes communication lines with security focal points and other agencies for coordination. Responsibilities encompass maintaining awareness of local security conditions, identifying threats, and advising UN staff on preventative steps. The role involves establishing and evaluating evacuation capabilities, monitoring physical and fire safety measures, and advising on residential security. Coordination with local authorities for disaster response, ensuring emergency communication functionality, supervising investigations, managing guard forces, arranging protection details for VIPs, and conducting security training are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in military, police, or security management is required (nine years with a first-level degree). This includes at least five years in security operations or administration within a military, police, or security organization. One year of international exposure and two years managing diverse security units in conflict/post-conflict environments are also required. Experience in Africa with the UN or a comparable organization is desirable.
