Urban Climate Resilience Intern
Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), within the UN Secretariat, seeks interns to support its Sustainable Urban Development Section. This section focuses on advancing resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban development across Asia and the Pacific, with a specific emphasis on urban climate resilience and heat adaptation initiatives in South and South-West Asia. The internship is based in Bangkok, Thailand.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Sustainable Urban Development Section's critical work on sustainable urban development and urban climate resilience in the Asia-Pacific region. The intern will contribute to ongoing initiatives, particularly those focused on urban heat resilience in South and South-West Asia. The role involves assisting with project coordination, stakeholder engagement, workshop preparation, research, knowledge management, and communications. By providing dedicated support, the intern will help the Section advance its mandate of promoting resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban development among ESCAP member States and key stakeholders, contributing to the region's adaptation and mitigation efforts against climate change impacts in urban environments.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide comprehensive support to the Environment and Development Division’s Sustainable Urban Development Section. Key responsibilities include assisting in the organization and implementation of meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagement activities, which involves drafting concept notes, agendas, and summaries. The role also entails supporting programme and project coordination for urban heat resilience initiatives, including maintaining project tracking tools, liaising with consultants and partners, and organizing documentation. Furthermore, the intern will conduct research and support knowledge management on urban climate resilience, urban heat adaptation, and sustainable urban planning, preparing background materials and case studies. Finally, the intern will assist with communications and outreach tasks, such as drafting content for websites and social media, preparing visual materials, and managing digital assets.
Work Experience
While not strictly required, experience supporting workshops, events, stakeholder engagement, or project coordination is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint) is preferred. Familiarity with climate change, sustainable urban development, urban resilience, or urban planning concepts is beneficial. Experience in data visualization, GIS, graphic design, or digital content creation is considered an asset.
