The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), within the UN Secretariat, is the leading global environmental authority. The Ecosystems Division, where this role is situated, collaborates with partners to provide technical assistance and capacity development for environmental policy implementation, particularly in developing countries. This consultancy is based in the Marine and Freshwater Branch, Freshwater Ecosystems Unit.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide strategic editorial, communications, and outreach support for UNEP's freshwater-related policy, governance, and stakeholder engagement activities. The role will enhance the quality, visibility, and dissemination of UNEP's freshwater communication and knowledge products across global policy processes. Key contributions include supporting major international freshwater and environmental governance events, developing accessible communication materials to increase stakeholder awareness and participation, and strengthening UNEP's digital presence for freshwater initiatives. The purpose is to ensure coherent, high-quality communication outputs that advance UNEP's strategic freshwater priorities and advocacy efforts.
Responsibilities
The role involves drafting, editing, proofreading, and supporting the publication of various freshwater-related documents, including technical reports, guidance documents, strategic papers, consultation summaries, and communication materials. Responsibilities include developing and disseminating communication and outreach materials for global freshwater, climate, and environmental governance processes, such as UNEA follow-up and UN-Water engagement. The consultant will prepare visibility materials for high-level meetings and global fora, support communication coordination for strategic freshwater initiatives, and produce/update website and digital content. Additionally, the role requires supporting stakeholder engagement through accessible materials, documenting technical inputs and best practices, coordinating advocacy materials, and facilitating internal communication and knowledge-sharing within UNEP and among partners.
Work Experience
A minimum of four years of experience in environment-related communication and outreach is required. Experience in writing and editing is essential. The role also requires experience working with multi-disciplinary teams, including technical experts, and a strong knowledge of website development and promotion.
