Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Secretariat supports Parties in implementing the Convention, which regulates international wildlife trade. This internship is based in Geneva and supports the CITES Secretariat's activities.
Job Purpose
This internship within the CITES Secretariat, under the direct supervision of the Secretary-General, aims to support the effective implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The role contributes to ensuring that international wildlife trade is legal, sustainable, and traceable. The intern will assist in various activities, including event planning, information analysis, and communication efforts, helping the Secretariat respond to current conservation needs and challenges and support Parties in their implementation efforts. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in international environmental law and sustainable development within a key UN agency.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist in planning and organizing high-level CITES events. This includes logistical support and coordination to ensure successful execution. The role involves compiling and preparing analyses of information in response to requests from Parties regarding the implementation of the Convention. This requires research and data synthesis skills. Additionally, the intern will support communication and social media activities managed by the Secretary-General, contributing to outreach and public engagement efforts. The intern will also undertake other assigned tasks as directed by the supervisor, providing broader support to the Secretariat's operational needs and contributing to the overall mission of CITES.

Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must have a field of study closely related to the internship's focus. The role requires the ability to undertake research, provide analytical and programmatic support, and compile, organize, and analyze data.
