SECURITY OFFICER
Organizational Context
This position is based in Mogadishu with the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) oversees the UN's security management system to ensure the safest conduct of its programmes and activities. The role reports to the Chief Security Officer, under the Principal Security Adviser.
Job Purpose
The Security Officer is responsible for assisting the Chief Security Officer in supervising a security unit, drafting and updating security contingency plans, and monitoring local security conditions. The role involves advising UN personnel on security issues, contributing to the security plan's implementation and evaluation, and coordinating emergency response systems. Responsibilities include conducting security risk assessments, monitoring security operations, maintaining communication with stakeholders, and ensuring the availability and maintenance of fire prevention and fighting equipment. The officer also conducts physical security inspections, manages guard forces, provides security advice and training, investigates incidents, and assists in planning protective services for senior officials. Additionally, the role involves preparing specifications for security equipment procurement, coordinating identity card issuance and entry controls, managing warden systems, and acting as Duty Officer when needed, including providing emergency response and first aid.
Responsibilities
Key duties include assisting in the supervision of a security unit, developing and updating security contingency plans, and monitoring local security conditions to advise UN personnel. The role involves active participation in the Security Cell for plan implementation and evaluation, monitoring evacuation capabilities, and coordinating a 24-hour Emergency Response System. Responsibilities extend to conducting security risk assessments, overseeing security operations, maintaining communication with stakeholders, and briefing senior officers. The Security Officer ensures fire safety measures are in place, conducts physical security inspections, manages guard forces, and performs security surveys. Providing security advice and training, investigating incidents, and contributing to capability gap identification are also crucial. The role includes assisting in protective service planning, specifying security equipment for procurement, monitoring equipment deployment, coordinating access controls, and managing warden systems. Acting as Duty Officer and providing emergency response and first aid are also key functions.
Work Experience
A minimum of six years of progressive experience in military, police, or security management is required, with at least two years at the international level and one year in a conflict/post-conflict environment. Desirable experience includes digital security solutions for reporting efficiency and providing emergency response and first aid.
