Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva hosts the Secretariat for the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Human Rights of Older Persons (IGWG HROP). This group is mandated to develop a legally binding international instrument to promote and protect the human rights of older individuals worldwide. This internship supports the critical operations of the IGWG HROP.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide students and recent graduates with valuable experience within the United Nations system, specifically supporting the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Human Rights of Older Persons (IGWG HROP). The role is crucial for the IGWG HROP's mandate of elaborating an international instrument to safeguard the human rights of older persons. Interns will contribute to essential tasks that facilitate the group's work, enhancing their understanding of international human rights mechanisms and the UN's operational environment. This experience is designed to enrich their educational background and provide practical exposure to human rights advocacy and policy development at the international level.
Responsibilities
Interns will provide comprehensive support to the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Human Rights of Older Persons (IGWG HROP). Key duties include preparing procedural notes and other preparatory documents, attending and summarizing meetings, and assisting with meeting logistics such as managing interactive presentations and virtual connections. Responsibilities also encompass conducting historical research and examining precedents, performing media-based analysis, and compiling statistics. Interns will be involved in designing and tabulating charts and graphs, maintaining meeting databases, and contributing to the drafting of notes, talking points, and briefing materials. Additionally, they will assist with website updates and redesigns, and undertake other necessary tasks to ensure the smooth functioning of the IGWG HROP's activities.
Work Experience
Prior professional experience is not a requirement for this internship. However, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights issues and a commitment to UN values, evidenced through academic achievements, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities. The ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is essential.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft 365 Products. Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs. Strong interest in human rights issues and commitment to UN values. Research and analytical skills. Communication and organizational skills.
