ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER
Organizational Context
The Economic Affairs Officer position is within the Economic Cooperation and Trade Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland. This role supports an extra-budgetary project focused on enhancing the traceability of sustainable value chains for the green transition. The officer reports to the Chief of the Competitiveness Section.
Job Purpose
The Economic Affairs Officer will conduct economic and sector analysis related to sustainable value chains, monitoring developments and identifying emerging issues relevant to UNECE. The role involves developing policy recommendations and supporting the creation of information exchange standards for trade facilitation and sustainable value chains management. A key aspect is providing substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, including serving as secretary to a Team of Specialists on ESG Transparency and Traceability for Sustainable Value Chains. The officer will also design and manage technical cooperation projects, conduct training, and contribute to mobilizing extra-budgetary funds to advance the Division’s strategic objectives in this critical area.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include monitoring economic developments in sustainable value chains, identifying relevant issues, and developing policy recommendations. The role involves supporting the creation of information exchange standards for trade facilitation and sustainable value chains management, and preparing inputs for senior staff presentations. The officer will provide substantive support to intergovernmental bodies on traceability and transparency, and serve as secretary to the UNECE Team of Specialists on ESG Transparency and Traceability for Sustainable Value Chains. Additionally, responsibilities encompass designing and managing technical cooperation projects, conducting missions to member states, preparing analyses for advising governments, and delivering training seminars. The role also includes supporting junior staff, participating in inter-departmental initiatives, mobilizing extra-budgetary funds, and performing administrative tasks.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, and policy formulation is required. At least two years of experience in sustainable value chains management is necessary. Experience in value chain traceability, UN or international organizations, and data analytics is desirable.
