PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT OFFICER (Zero Plastic Waste)
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its Industry and Economy Division encourages sustainable consumption and production. The Chemicals and Health Branch, through the International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC) in Osaka, supports developing countries in implementing holistic waste management solutions, focusing on innovative prevention and management methods to improve well-being and create jobs.
Job Purpose
The Programme Management Officer will coordinate analysis on plastic waste reduction and recycling, assessing innovations and supporting policy development. This role involves providing technical guidance on waste reduction activities, reviewing related publications, and engaging with the private sector to scale up solutions and mobilize resources. The incumbent will also support meetings and utilize data visualization for informed decision-making, contributing to UNEP's mission as a center of excellence for environmentally sound technologies in waste management.
Responsibilities
Coordinate environmental, social, and economic analysis for plastic waste reduction and recycling initiatives, collaborating with regional offices and partners. Assess innovations, technologies, and scalable solutions for waste management, presenting comparative analyses. Research and analyze trends to support policy development for reducing waste, with an emphasis on plastic and methane-generating waste. Provide technical guidance on waste reduction and recycling activities, including feasibility and impact assessments. Support the quality control of waste-related publications and communication materials. Engage with the private sector to foster partnerships for knowledge sharing, scaling solutions, financing, and capacity development. Assist in resource mobilization through project concept development. Provide substantive support for meetings and conferences related to waste management. Analyze data using visualization methods to inform planning and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in project or programme management is required. Two years of experience in greening supply chains or supporting governments on waste reduction is necessary. Experience with developing countries and managing projects to reduce plastic pollution is also required. Desirable: two years of experience in data analytics.

Technological awareness and willingness to learn new technologies.
