Organizational Context
This Accountant role is within the Income Tax Unit of the Department of Operational Support at the UN Secretariat. The department provides operational advisory services across the Secretariat. The Income Tax Unit focuses on analysis, technical direction, and problem-solving for tax processes and systems, supporting global payroll and payments.
Job Purpose
The Accountant will provide expert advice and guidance on tax reimbursement processes, policies, and procedures to headquarters and field staff, ensuring accurate reimbursements and protection of the TEA Fund. This role involves analytical research on tax returns and documents, contributing to organizational understanding and problem-solving for tax systems. The Accountant will also play a key role in the planning, supervision, and testing of tax systems, including the UN Tax Portal and in-house systems, and will simplify complex tax matters for clients. Additionally, the position supports financial information systems, analyzes best practices, and resolves complex tax system issues, ensuring the integrity of financial and management systems.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include providing tax advice, guidance, and training to staff on reimbursement processes, policies, and procedures, and protecting the TEA Fund. The Accountant will conduct analytical research on tax returns and documents, interact with various UN departments and agencies, and explain complex tax matters. This role involves planning, supervising, and participating in the development and testing of tax systems, including the UN Tax Portal. The Accountant will also evaluate tax cases, coordinate with HR on immigration status impacts, and review relevant workbooks. Furthermore, the position contributes to financial information systems by providing input for business analysis, system implementation, and problem-solving for systems like STARS and Umoja. The Accountant will ensure the integrity of financial systems, document system problems, and write work procedures.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive professional experience in income taxes, budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, or payroll is required, including complex operations. At least five years specifically focused on US income tax transactional activities is necessary. Experience with UN systems and procedures, and finance systems analysis/development is also required. Experience with SAP Crystal Reports or similar ERP systems (SAP, People Soft) is desirable.
