Organizational Context
The Human Rights Assistant positions are within the Human Rights Service of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Based in Kabul and various field offices, these roles report to a Human Rights Officer/Team Leader, contributing to the mission's human rights mandate across the country.
Job Purpose
The Human Rights Assistant supports the planning and execution of UNAMA's human rights activities, including monitoring, fact-finding, awareness-raising, capacity building, and advocacy. This involves assisting in data collection and analysis, documenting complaints, preparing reports, and facilitating meetings with stakeholders. The role contributes to the overall mission of promoting and protecting human rights in Afghanistan by ensuring accurate information management, supporting outreach initiatives, and facilitating operational activities, including field missions and logistical support for human rights events.
Responsibilities
Key duties include assisting in the planning and execution of monitoring, fact-finding, awareness-raising, capacity building, and advocacy activities. This involves contributing to initial assessments, developing monitoring tools, and participating in human rights promotional events. The role requires receiving and documenting complaints of alleged human rights violations, and assisting in the collection, analysis, and reporting of human rights data. Responsibilities also encompass ensuring data quality in databases, drafting reports, and preparing communication materials. Additionally, the assistant will support logistical organization for human rights activities, map relevant local actors and information sources, and assist in developing contacts with authorities and civil society. Monitoring media, providing translation services, and participating in field missions are also integral parts of the role.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, gender, social work, or a closely related field is required. This is reduced to 3 years for candidates with a university degree. Experience in human rights monitoring, data analysis, and database management is desirable.
