The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The CITES Secretariat supports Parties in implementing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which regulates international wildlife trade. This internship is within the CITES Enforcement Unit in Geneva.
Job Purpose
This internship within the CITES Enforcement Unit in Geneva aims to support the unit's activities in promoting legal, sustainable, and traceable international wildlife trade. The intern will assist in research, analysis, and documentation related to enforcement matters, contributing to the effective implementation of CITES decisions and recommendations. The role also involves supporting activities for the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) and facilitating communication with international partners. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in international environmental law enforcement and sustainable development within a leading UN agency.
Responsibilities
Assist in background research and preparation of briefing papers on CITES enforcement matters for governing body meetings. Compile and analyze information submitted by Parties on their implementation of the Convention. Support the delivery of activities related to CITES decisions and recommendations on enforcement. Aid in preparing documents and materials for the ICCWC and implementing its activities. Facilitate communication with Parties and partner organizations like INTERPOL and the World Customs Organization. Update enforcement-related content on CITES and ICCWC websites. Assist in planning and organizing meetings, conferences, and workshops. Prepare and update presentations and materials for workshops and meetings. Participate in meetings as appropriate. Take minutes and prepare/distribute meeting documents.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, academic qualifications in a relevant field such as law enforcement, policing, criminal justice, homeland security, or environmental law are necessary. Experience with compliance or enforcement in areas like judiciary, customs, policy, or wildlife authority is desirable.
Skills
Research and analytical skills. Communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to prepare and update documents and presentations. Familiarity with CITES or similar organizations is desirable. Excellent writing skills are desirable. Fluency in English; knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
