The Resident Coordinator (RC) system, established by the General Assembly, ensures UN development system coordination at the country level. Job Purpose
The Resident Coordinator (RC) serves as the highest-ranking UN development system representative at the country level, reporting directly to the Secretary-General. The primary purpose of this role is to lead UN country teams, ensuring effective coordination of all UN entities operating in the country. This involves developing, monitoring, and implementing the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework in full consultation with the host government and diverse partners. The RC is responsible for coordinating system-wide support, mitigating risks to SDG achievement, and advocating for UN values, human rights, and gender equality. The role also involves fostering strategic partnerships, leveraging UN system expertise, and promoting innovation to advance the 2030 Agenda and achieve sustainable development goals, leaving no one behind.
Responsibilities
The Resident Coordinator (RC) represents the UN at the highest levels, engaging with government, civil society, and partners to advance the 2030 Agenda and SDGs. The RC leads the UN country team in developing and implementing the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, ensuring system-wide coordination and risk mitigation. Key duties include advocating for UN values, human rights, and gender equality; forging strategic partnerships with diverse national stakeholders; identifying and leveraging UN system expertise for shared results; overseeing country financing instruments and pursuing funding for joint UN efforts; and leading strategic communication to promote the 2030 Agenda. The RC also ensures coordination of country-level security when appointed as Designated Official, promotes staff learning and PSEA strategies, and manages the Resident Coordinator's Office.
Work Experience
Over 15 years of international leadership experience is required, including at least five years in development, human rights, rule of law, peace-building, or humanitarian work at the country level outside one's own country. Previous Resident Coordinator experience is mandatory. Experience as a senior official accountable for security is desirable.
