Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York seeks an intern to support its humanitarian affairs functions. This role is part of the UN Secretariat and contributes to OCHA's mission of coordinating humanitarian responses and advocating for affected populations.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide a learning opportunity within the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York. The intern will support humanitarian affairs officers in various tasks, including drafting communications, developing partnerships, assisting with resource mobilization advocacy, and organizing meetings. The role involves researching and analyzing humanitarian issues, maintaining awareness of relevant developments, and responding to information requests. This position offers practical experience in humanitarian coordination and contributes to OCHA's operational and policy work.
Responsibilities
Support the drafting of talking points, memos, and other documents for communication with government officials, UN agencies, NGOs, and diplomatic missions. Assist in developing strategic partnerships and supporting advocacy efforts for resource mobilization for UN-wide humanitarian responses. Help organize and participate in work groups, meetings, conferences, and consultations on humanitarian and emergency relief matters. Draft and prepare background documents, reports, issue briefs, and presentations on humanitarian issues. Research, analyze, and present information on humanitarian policy and legislative matters. Maintain awareness of current humanitarian affairs, including political, policy, and gender considerations. Respond to internal and external inquiries and prepare correspondence.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study closely related to humanitarian affairs is essential. Demonstrated interest in humanitarian issues and the work of the UN is desirable.
Skills
Excellent knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams. Fluency in spoken and written English. Demonstrated keen interest in humanitarian issues. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions.
