The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) focuses on Brazil, working with local authorities to improve urban policies. This role is within the Viva o Verde SP project in São Paulo.
Job Purpose
The Biologist will contribute to the Viva o Verde SP project, a UN-Habitat initiative in São Paulo aimed at improving access, inclusion, and sustainability of public green spaces. This role is crucial for developing the environmental content of management and financing plans for ten parks. The Biologist will support the Head of the Brazil Office, collaborating with UN-Habitat teams to ensure the project's objectives are met, focusing on enhancing climate adaptation and resilience through better park management and design. The position requires developing comprehensive environmental assessments and action plans for these urban green spaces.
Responsibilities
The Biologist is responsible for planning and executing consultancy activities, including reviewing existing park-related documents and conducting fieldwork in ten São Paulo parks. This involves evaluating secondary data, identifying data gaps, and assessing the feasibility of primary data collection. The role includes collecting and analyzing both primary and secondary data to develop environment-related content, such as texts, diagrams, and graphics. The Biologist will also participate in meetings and workshops with stakeholders to support the development of park management plans and contribute to the creation of environmental action plans for each park, ensuring they are evidence-based and aligned with project goals.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in urban biology, environmental assessment, protected area management, or urban environmental planning in Brazil is required. Experience in organizing and leading fieldwork is essential. Experience with participatory workshops, environmental public policies, urban sustainability, and UN system projects is desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office is required. Knowledge and experience in data collection and analysis are desirable. Experience with geospatial data and software (ArcGIS or QGIS) is also desirable. Strong professionalism, planning, organization, communication, and teamwork skills are essential.
