Organizational Context
This position is within the UN Information Service (UNIS) in Geneva, reporting to the Director of UNIS and the Department of Global Communications. The role involves the supervision and management of the Radio, Television, and Webcast Section, contributing to the UN's communication efforts.
Job Purpose
The Chief of Section, Public Information, is responsible for overseeing the broadcast and webcast of UN meetings, media activities, and events in Geneva. This includes planning, producing, and distributing multimedia news coverage across various platforms like UNTV, UN Web TV, and UN News, ensuring the highest editorial standards. The role involves managing the section's staff, resources, and budget, developing procurement plans, and coordinating contributions to UN DGC platforms and UN News. Additionally, the incumbent initiates co-production projects, manages extra-budgetary funds, supervises logistical arrangements for visual coverage, and ensures efficient multimedia services. The position may also require deputizing for the Director and serving as the UN Geneva Spokesperson.
Responsibilities
The Chief of Section manages the Radio, Television, and Broadcast Section, overseeing multimedia coverage (video, audio, text, photo) of meetings, events, and feature stories for UN platforms and external media. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and supervising contributions to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), UNifeed, and UN News, including audio/radio/podcast/vodcast programs. The role involves managing the section's staff, facilities, and resources, developing production budgets, and executing procurement plans for capital equipment. The incumbent also initiates co-production projects with various partners, manages extra-budgetary funds, supervises logistical arrangements for visual coverage, and ensures effective multimedia services. Collaboration with administrative sections and deputizing for the Director, including serving as Spokesperson, are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in broadcast journalism or multimedia communications is required, with at least five years at the international level. Essential experience includes supervision, team management, assignment planning, writing and editing news under tight deadlines, and live news production/live-streaming.
