Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) monitors, documents, and reports on violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. This role supports the implementation of OHCHR's activities under the direct supervision of the Head of the Gaza Sub-office.
Job Purpose
The Assistant Human Rights Officer supports the OHCHR's mandate in the occupied Palestinian territory by assisting in the monitoring, documentation, and reporting of human rights and international humanitarian law violations. The role involves analyzing cases and trends, engaging with civil society and other stakeholders, collecting and analyzing data, and contributing to reports and correspondence. The officer will also liaise with various actors to address human rights issues and prepare communications for the Head of the Gaza Sub-office, contributing to the promotion and protection of human rights in the region.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include assisting in the analysis of human rights cases and protection trends within the occupied Palestinian territory, based on international human rights and humanitarian law. The role involves supporting engagement with international and local NGOs, civil society, and individuals on human rights matters. The Assistant Human Rights Officer will contribute to data collection, analysis, and identification of trends, using visualization methods for reporting. They will research and collect information on violations, draft reports and correspondence, and participate in discussions with authorities and influential actors to prevent or address violations. Additionally, the role includes liaising with government, NHRI, NGOs, UN agencies, and partners to monitor the human rights situation and facilitate case referrals, with a focus on vulnerable groups, and preparing preliminary versions of speeches and presentations.
Work Experience
For candidates with an advanced university degree, no professional work experience is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree need two additional years of qualifying work experience. Experience in monitoring and documenting human rights violations is desirable.
