Organizational Context
The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), is seeking Statistics interns for its various branches in New York. This is an unpaid, full-time internship opportunity, typically lasting 2-6 months, with potential for flexible work arrangements.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in statistical work within the UN Secretariat. Interns will support the division's mandate by contributing to data collection, validation, analysis, dissemination, and visualization projects. They will assist in maintaining statistical databases, developing reports, and preparing documentation for international meetings. The role offers exposure to diverse statistical areas, including economic, social, environmental, and development statistics, fostering professional growth and understanding of global statistical practices.
Responsibilities
Interns will contribute to various statistical projects, supporting the division's work in data collection, analysis, and dissemination. Key duties include data validation, analysis, and visualization; supporting statistical databases and dashboards; preparing reports and technical documentation; and assisting with outreach efforts. Specific tasks may involve creating research contributions, developing software prototypes (e.g., in Python), producing social media content, and assisting in the organization of seminars and expert meetings. Interns will also provide training and technical support on data collection programs and methodologies.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required. However, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software, particularly the MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams). Experience with data analysis, visualization, databases, survey design, or Python programming is desirable.
