The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) supports Mediterranean countries in protecting the marine and coastal environment through the Ecosystem Approach (EcAp) and the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme (IMAP). This role supports the SEMPA Project, funded by the EU, focusing on developing new climate change indicators for IMAP.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen UNEP/MAP's monitoring and assessment capacities by developing Guidance Factsheets, defining Good Environmental Status (GES), and setting associated targets for two new climate change indicators: coastal flooding (cCI 42) and burnt forest areas (cCI 43). The role will provide technical inputs for IMAP/EcAp governance discussions, contributing to the operationalization of these indicators within the Mediterranean region. The work is crucial for advancing the IMAP program and ensuring reliable regional environmental assessments, particularly concerning climate change impacts.
Responsibilities
Develop Guidance Factsheets (GFS) for Candidate Common Indicators (cCIs) 42 (coastal flooding) and 43 (burnt forest areas), including definitions of Good Environmental Status (GES), associated targets, and assessment methods. Prepare initial drafts and revise them based on feedback from CORMON meetings on Coast and Hydrography. Consolidate meeting inputs and recommendations into comprehensive reports. Finalize the GFS incorporating all feedback and inputs from UNEP/MAP governance. Provide technical contributions to IMAP/EcAp governance discussions, specifically within CORMON meetings scheduled for 2026/2027. This role is home-based and expected to last 12 months.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in sustainable forest management, flooding practices, forest/flooding risk assessment, or environmental policy document development. Previous experience with Mediterranean marine and coastal environment assessment is desirable. Proficiency in office automation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
