Job Purpose
This role supports the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) in Montreal, administered by UNEP. The purpose is to provide crucial support for advancing the agenda on subnational governments and local authorities in the lead-up to and during key international meetings, specifically SBI 7 and COP17. This involves assisting with documentation, event preparation, stakeholder engagement, and coordination of associated activities. The contractor will contribute to strengthening the participation of subnational and local entities in global environmental governance processes and ensure the effective implementation of the Convention's objectives related to biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
Responsibilities
The individual contractor will support the finalization of pre-session documents and substantive inputs related to subnational governments' role in implementing the GBF and Convention. This includes identifying, reviewing, and compiling case studies and experiences. The role involves supporting substantive and organizational preparations for the agenda item on subnational governments at SBI 7 and COP17, including drafting background notes, speaking points, and meeting materials. Additionally, the contractor will support outreach and engagement with subnational governments and local authorities to facilitate their meaningful participation in COP17 events and coordinate with partner organizations. Support will also be provided for the coordination and preparation of key associated events, such as the Cities Summit and meetings of advisory committees, and for the final reporting on activities undertaken.
Work Experience
A minimum of six years of progressively responsible professional experience in stakeholder engagement, governance, public administration, international relations, sustainable development, or environmental policy is required. Experience supporting coordination processes, drafting reports, and assisting with meeting preparation is desirable. Experience engaging with subnational governments and international organizations is also desirable.
Skills
Strong organizational and planning skills. Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities. Excellent drafting skills for reports, briefing notes, and presentations. Ability to adapt writing to different audiences. Communication, Teamwork, Planning and Organizing.
