FIELD SECURITY ASSOCIATE
Organizational Context
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) globally leads and supports the UN security management system, enabling safe and effective program delivery in challenging environments. This Field Security Associate role is based in Djibouti, Djibouti, under the Deputy Security Adviser and Security Coordination Officer. It contributes to the UN's mission of enabling program activities through trusted security leadership and solutions.
Job Purpose
The Field Security Associate supports the implementation of security operations and the management of safety and security for UN personnel within their Area of Responsibility (AoR). This involves assisting the Security Coordination Officer in gathering and disseminating security information, liaising with host government and local authorities, and assessing the security situation. The role also contributes to maintaining the UN Security Plan, monitoring security measures, reporting incidents, and providing security awareness training and orientations. Additionally, the Associate advises on residential security, manages the warden system and pass/ID system, and liaises with commercial security providers, while also providing general administrative support.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include assisting in collecting, updating, and communicating security situation information; liaising with host government security, local authorities, military, police, and NGOs; assessing security situations and verifying information; communicating security issues to UN agency heads and providing host country security advice; maintaining contact with UN agency Security Focal Points; providing technical assistance at security meetings; assisting in the preparation and review of the UN Security Plan and supporting its implementation; monitoring security measures and assisting in incident reporting and security assessments; supporting security awareness training and providing security orientations and briefings; evaluating security and advising on residential security measures; establishing and maintaining the warden system; administering a pass and ID system; liaising with commercial security companies; and providing general administrative assistance, including maintaining files, databases, and meeting minutes.
Work Experience
Seven years of work experience in security, risk, disaster, or emergency areas is required. This experience can be in public or private service, such as national security, military, police, or a corporate environment. The minimum experience is reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) is mandatory. Prior UN system or international NGO experience and experience with radio communications systems are desirable.
