Organizational Context
The Political Affairs Intern will support the Northern Africa Division (NAD) within the joint regional structure of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Peace Operations (DPO). The Division monitors and reports on developments in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Western Sahara, and supports related peace operations and special political missions.
Job Purpose
This internship provides an opportunity to support the Northern Africa Division (NAD) in monitoring and analyzing political and security developments across North Africa and the Western Sahara region. The intern will contribute to the Division's reporting, communication materials, and research activities, gaining practical experience in international affairs and peacebuilding. The role involves backstopping support for UN missions and political processes, offering exposure to the operational aspects of the UN's work in conflict prevention and resolution. This position is designed to enhance the intern's understanding of regional dynamics and the UN's role in addressing complex political challenges.
Responsibilities
Monitor and analyze key political and security developments in the North Africa region, particularly concerning the implementation of field mission mandates. Contribute to the Division's reporting by synthesizing information from situation reports, press clippings, and media. Conduct social media monitoring and summarize relevant public and academic articles and correspondences. Assist in preparing communication materials, including presentations, and draft minutes for meetings. Undertake individual research assignments and contribute to briefing materials. Support the Division's innovation mainstreaming efforts and perform other assigned duties as required.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is required. Experience with standard software applications is expected, and the ability to undertake political analysis and summarize information is desirable.
