The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts and ensuring synergies among global activities. Based in Geneva, UNDRR monitors progress on the Sendai Framework, supports its implementation, and raises global awareness. Extreme heat is a critical 21st-century challenge, impacting health, productivity, and infrastructure, necessitating urgent, coordinated action.
Job Purpose
This internship supports UNDRR's critical work on extreme heat risk governance and investment, a top-tier climate risk identified by the UN Secretary-General. The role contributes to implementing pilot projects for the Extreme Heat Risk Governance Framework and Toolkit in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The intern will assist in building sustained, heat risk-informed decision-making and investment strategies, directly supporting UNDRR's mission to reduce disaster risk and enhance global resilience to climate-related hazards.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide essential support to UNDRR officers in managing information, coordinating between headquarters, regional offices, and implementing partners for three extreme heat risk governance and investment projects. Key duties include assisting with day-to-day project implementation, tracking progress, following up on actions, and facilitating communication with government counterparts, investors, and donors. The role involves supporting the analysis of knowledge gaps, mapping existing initiatives, and contributing to partner-led research. Additionally, the intern will help document lessons learned, facilitate cross-learning, support the Expert Group, and contribute to advocacy and communications efforts, including drafting materials and supporting outreach events.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary. Applicants must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree program or higher, or have completed such a program.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Demonstrated ability to conduct desk-based research, analysis, and synthesis. Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with diverse cultural backgrounds and opinions. Fluency in spoken and written English. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable.
