Job Purpose
This internship within the Human Rights Inquiries Branch of the OHCHR in Geneva aims to support the organization's mission to protect human rights for all. The intern will gain practical experience by assisting Human Rights Officers in crucial tasks. This includes collecting and analyzing information on human rights situations in the Middle East, researching and drafting case reports, responding to information requests, and preparing various documentation. The role is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of international human rights mechanisms and the work of the UN Secretariat.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the OHCHR's mission by assisting in the systematic collection and analysis of information concerning human rights in the Middle East region. Key duties include preparing reports, documents, and other written materials. The intern will also research and draft individual cases of alleged human rights violations and respond to information requests related to the region. Additionally, responsibilities involve preparing and updating country profiles, briefing packages, and regular reports. The intern will assist in preparing documents on thematic and country-specific human rights issues and take minutes of meetings. Participation in side-events, Human Rights Council sessions, Treaty Bodies, and Universal Periodic Review (UPR) reviews may also be required, along with performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Professional work experience is not required for participation in this internship program. The focus is on academic background and the potential to learn and contribute within the field of human rights.
Skills
Fluency in English and Arabic is required. A demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and human rights is essential. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and a willingness to understand differing opinions are necessary. Working knowledge of another language from the Middle East region is desirable.
