CCAC Air Quality and Health Specialist for the Super Pollutants Accelerator in Mexico
Organizational Context
The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), hosted by UNEP in Paris, is a global partnership focused on integrated climate and clean air solutions. Mexico, a leading country in super pollutant reduction, is part of the CCAC Super Pollutant Country Action Accelerator. This role supports Mexico's efforts to implement ambitious super pollutant commitments by strengthening institutional systems and deploying mitigation models.
Job Purpose
This role serves to enhance the Mexican Government's capacity to integrate scientific expertise on the interlinkages between short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), ambient and household air pollution, and human health. The specialist will ensure that mitigation strategies are designed, implemented, and evaluated effectively to achieve measurable improvements in air quality and public health. The position is crucial for accelerating Mexico's implementation of its super pollutant commitments through strengthened institutional systems and the deployment of integrated, scalable mitigation models in priority sectors, contributing to national climate and health objectives.
Responsibilities
The specialist will strengthen the scientific foundation for integrating health and air quality evidence into SLCP mitigation policies by producing reports, briefings, and hotspot maps. They will develop and deliver a health impact assessment toolkit, including methods, templates, and guidance for quantifying health outcomes and benefits. Additionally, the role involves providing evidence-based technical guidance to sectoral authorities to maximize public health benefits from mitigation actions, creating sector-specific documents and health-prioritized mitigation portfolios. The specialist will also prepare consolidated knowledge products for national and international reporting, including case studies and an annual Air Quality & Health Co-Benefits Report, and develop communication materials for relevant platforms.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5-7 years of experience analyzing air pollutants, super pollutant emissions, and their health impacts, preferably in Latin America or middle-income countries, is required. Experience with health impact assessment methodologies, policy design, and implementation integrating health evidence is essential. Experience working with government and international partners in the environmental/climate sector is desired.
Skills
Expertise in air pollution science and SLCPs; strong background in environmental health and exposure assessment; ability to analyze pollutant exposure effects on human health; proficiency in health impact assessment methodologies and tools (e.g., AirQ+, BenMAP); understanding of environmental and public health policies; excellent communication skills for translating complex science; experience preparing technical reports and capacity-building content; proficiency in air quality monitoring, modeling, and data interpretation; ability to estimate co-benefits of mitigation actions; knowledge of national climate, air quality, and health sector governance in Mexico.
