Organizational Context
The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) is seeking an Information Analyst Intern to support the Judicial Support and Cooperation Section (JSCS) in Geneva. This section assists national, regional, and international courts by sharing information and expertise for investigations and prosecutions related to serious crimes in Syria. The intern will contribute to case development and gain experience in international accountability mechanisms.
Job Purpose
The Information Analyst Intern will provide crucial analytical support to the Judicial Support and Cooperation Section (JSCS) of the IIIM. This role involves conducting open-source research, monitoring, data processing, and contextual analysis to aid in the collection and assessment of information relevant to case development. The intern will contribute to the Mechanism's efforts to support various national jurisdictions in their pursuit of justice for serious crimes committed in Syria. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to develop analytical and data management skills while gaining firsthand experience with a UN international accountability mechanism and its cooperation with diverse national judicial authorities.
Responsibilities
The Information Analyst Intern will conduct contextual open-source searches to support criminal investigations, focusing on incident verification and background information. Responsibilities include monitoring specific open sources for updates relevant to active domestic criminal investigations and assisting in the analysis of material and records, such as reviewing documents, locations, and preparing timelines. The intern will also perform weekly open-source monitoring of political and judicial developments relevant to the JSCS and report findings. Additionally, the role involves entering and reviewing record-related information for the IIIM's collected materials. General support tasks include assisting with informal translations and summarizing Arabic-language materials, and taking minutes during internal and cross-sectional meetings.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Knowledge of standard software applications, including MS Word, MS Outlook, and MS Teams, is required. Knowledge of criminal accountability in the Syrian context is desirable.
