Economic Affairs Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) offers an internship within its Least Developed Countries (LDCs) Section, part of the Policy Analysis and Research Branch. This is an unpaid, full-time internship based in Geneva, available either in-person or remotely. The intern will report to an Economic Affairs Officer.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in economic affairs research and analysis within UNCTAD's LDC Section. The intern will support the team by conducting desk research, performing statistical and econometric analyses, and assisting in the preparation of research outputs and policy recommendations. The role contributes to UNCTAD's work on LDC development trends, international trade, and graduation policies. Interns will gain exposure to macroeconomic analysis, literature reviews, and report drafting, while participating in relevant meetings and training sessions, fostering their professional development in international development and economics.
Responsibilities
Conduct desk research on LDC graduation, its impacts, and vulnerabilities, synthesizing findings for division publications. Perform statistical and econometric analyses using international datasets (e.g., UNCTADstat, World Development Indicators). Provide research assistance, including literature reviews, macroeconomic trend analysis, and drafting inputs for speeches and presentations on LDC development, trade, and graduation strategies. Assist in formulating policy conclusions based on analytical research. Participate in online meetings, training, and workshops as required. Ensure adherence to UNCTAD rules and regulations, and maintain confidentiality of information.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, previous research or volunteer experience related to sustainable development or least developed countries is considered an advantage. Applicants must be students in their final year of a university degree program or have completed a degree.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications. Proficiency in statistics and economic analysis (R or Stata). Demonstrated keen interest in the UN's work and commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Strong research and analytical skills. Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
