Organizational Context
This position is within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Liaison Office in Islamabad. The Light Vehicle Driver will report directly to the Head of the UNAMA Liaison Office in Islamabad, playing a key role in supporting the office's operational needs.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this role is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of authorized personnel, official mail, documents, and supplies for the UNAMA Liaison Office in Islamabad. The driver will also be responsible for the basic maintenance and readiness of UNAMA vehicles, including performing minor repairs and maintaining accurate records of trips, mileage, and fuel consumption. A critical aspect of the role involves possessing detailed knowledge of Islamabad and surrounding routes, understanding security conditions, and ensuring compliance with all UN security directives and reporting procedures for road missions. The position requires flexibility to support the Head of Office for official duties beyond standard working hours.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include safely driving UNAMA vehicles for personnel transport and delivering/collecting mail, documents, and supplies. The role involves performing daily checks and basic maintenance on vehicles, such as monitoring oil, water, battery, and tires, and undertaking minor repairs like changing flat tires. Ensuring vehicles are fueled, clean, and roadworthy is essential. Accurate record-keeping of trips, mileage, and fuel consumption is required. The driver must possess comprehensive knowledge of Islamabad city, local roads, and routes to Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Peshawar, along with an awareness of security conditions. Reporting vehicle damages and faults to the Transport Officer and adhering to UN rules for accident and incident reporting are crucial. Compliance with UNAMA security directives for road missions and convoys is mandatory. The role may also involve assisting with data collection and visualization, and transporting the Head of Office for meetings and official duties, often outside regular hours. Familiarity with liaison work with various government and diplomatic entities is also expected.
Work Experience
A minimum of one year of driving experience with a safe driving record within a UN entity is required. Experience driving armored vehicles and with the United Nations system or international organizations is also required. Experience driving various vehicle types is desirable. The minimum experience requirement is waived for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher in mechanical engineering.
