ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER
Organizational Context
This position is within the Environmental Technical Support Unit at the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi. The unit is part of the Planning and Sourcing Support Section, Supply Chain Service. The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Environmental Technical Support Unit, contributing to the UN's environmental strategies.
Job Purpose
The Environmental Engineer (Waste) supports the implementation of the Environment Strategy for Peace Operations, specifically the Waste Pillar, and provides technical assistance. This role involves advising field missions on waste management, developing budgets for waste systems, and preparing consolidated environmental reports. The position requires assessing existing waste infrastructure, proposing risk-reduction solutions, and developing training activities to enhance mission capacity. The role may involve travel to remote field locations to support UNGSC mission support functions, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and contributing to the UN's sustainability objectives.
Responsibilities
The Environmental Engineer (Waste) is responsible for implementing environmental guidelines and leading waste working groups. This includes providing technical support to field missions on waste management, offering guidance on policies and host country standards, and assisting with budget development for waste systems, including hazardous waste. The role involves reviewing engineering project contracts for waste disposal, formulating and evaluating waste procedures, and developing conceptual designs and plans for waste management systems. Additionally, the incumbent will assess current waste infrastructure, propose technical solutions, support capacity-building training, liaise with external organizations, and stay updated on environmental developments. Travel to field missions may be required.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in environmental engineering or related fields is required. Experience in managing diverse waste streams (residential, commercial) is desirable. Experience in environmental engineering within international peacekeeping, post-conflict environments, field operations, or military operations is also desirable.
