Organizational Context
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi provides essential Supply Chain, Geospatial, and IT services to global peacekeeping and special political missions. This Engineering Assistant role is within the Environmental Technical Support Unit, Planning and Sourcing Support Section, Supply Chain Service, reporting to the Chief of the Unit.
Job Purpose
The Engineering Assistant supports the implementation of the Environment Strategy for Peace Operations, specifically the Water and Wastewater Pillar, and provides technical assistance. This involves managing and supervising projects for water and wastewater infrastructure construction, repair, and installation, ensuring quality and compliance with standards. The role includes planning and designing minor and major projects, conducting site visits, assessing technical feasibility, and preparing project documentation. It also involves data collection, cost analysis, reviewing technical offers, and contributing to budget preparation. Travel to field missions may be required to support UNGSC functions.
Responsibilities
Manage and supervise projects for water and wastewater infrastructure, including planning, scheduling, construction, repair, and installation. Ensure project quality aligns with terms, conditions, codes, standards, and health/safety regulations. Conduct site visits, technical assessments, and prototype inspections. Analyze project proposals for feasibility and resource estimation. Prepare technical specifications, drawings, bills of quantity, and cost estimates for bidding packages. Support technical assessments of existing infrastructure and assist in preparing draft proposals. Review technical offers, coordinate with procurement, and participate in budget preparation for water and wastewater systems. Suggest improvements for efficiency and cost reduction. May act as Team Leader and travel to field missions for up to three months.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of seven years in water and wastewater engineering, environmental engineering, facilities management, or related fields. Desirable experience includes at least three years in planning and designing water and wastewater infrastructure, with strong coordination skills in project management.
