HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICER / INVESTIGATOR (Temporary Job Opening) - 2 Positions
Organizational Context
This role is within the Independent International Fact Finding Mission for the Sudan, established by Human Rights Council Resolution A/HRC/RES/60/3. The Human Rights Officer/Investigator will report to the Fact Finding Team Leader and the overall Coordinator of the Mission, contributing to its mandate and operations.
Job Purpose
The Human Rights Officer/Investigator is responsible for researching, collecting, and analyzing information related to human rights, international humanitarian, and criminal law matters within the Sudan. This involves conducting investigations, interviewing victims and witnesses, monitoring trends in violations, and utilizing various tools for data collection and verification. The role also includes ensuring the protection of victims and witnesses, maintaining the security of investigation documentation, and contributing to the Mission's reports. A key aspect is integrating gender perspectives throughout the investigative and reporting processes to ensure comprehensive and sensitive analysis of human rights issues.
Responsibilities
Key duties include researching and analyzing human rights, international humanitarian, and criminal law issues relevant to the Mission's mandate, and proposing investigative methods. The role involves conducting investigations, including interviews, to corroborate allegations of violations. Responsibilities extend to monitoring trends and patterns of violations, employing tools for geolocation and authenticity assessment of collected materials, and identifying alleged perpetrators. The officer will participate in and organize missions, ensure the protection of victims and witnesses adhering to the 'do no harm' principle, and safeguard investigation documentation. Preliminary analysis and drafting of analytical documents, including gender analysis, are required, along with contributing to the Fact Finding Mission's reports and ensuring gender-sensitive approaches are integrated throughout all stages.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in human rights is required. Additionally, at least two years of experience conducting investigations into violations of international human rights law, international humanitarian law, or international criminal law is necessary. Experience working in or concerning the region is desirable.
