Intern - Project Support (Shanghai Award)
Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya, is mandated to promote sustainable towns and cities globally. As the UN's focal point for urbanization, it collaborates with partners to build inclusive, safe, and resilient urban environments. This internship is within the Regional Programme Division, supporting initiatives like the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities and the Shanghai Manual.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the implementation of the 4th cycle of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) and the 2026 annual report for the Shanghai Manual. The role will contribute to advancing the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda by assisting with communications, advocacy, and project management activities. The intern will help promote sustainable urban development solutions and support UN-Habitat's strategic goals and flagship programmes, contributing to the localization of SDGs and the Global Urban Monitoring Framework.
Responsibilities
Assist in drafting, editing, and preparing publicity materials, including news stories, newsletters, emails, and social media content for the Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual. Support the regular updating and maintenance of content on the Shanghai Award website and other online platforms. Aid in the development of technical documents and organization of information related to the Shanghai Award application and review process. Conduct research, gather case studies, and assist in drafting content for the Shanghai Manual. Help develop and analyze databases for both the Shanghai Award and Shanghai Manual projects. Provide support in planning and organizing meetings, workshops, seminars, and other events. Offer project management and administrative assistance as required, and perform other assigned tasks.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, experience in organizing meetings and events is desirable. Experience in creating public-facing content, such as social media posts, emails, newsletters, or press materials, is also considered advantageous.
Skills
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite. Strong interest in the UN's work and commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact effectively with diverse cultural backgrounds. Excellent oral and written English communication skills. Desirable: Knowledge of another UN language. Desirable: Experience in event organization. Desirable: Experience in content creation for public outreach.
