Organizational Context
This position is within the Strategic Communications Section (SCS) of the UN Secretariat, serving the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Peace Operations (DPO). SCS is part of the Office of the Director for Coordination and Shared Services (ODCSS), which supports integrated departmental management. The role operates under the Chief of Section, contributing to the core mandates of DPPA and DPO in conflict prevention, resolution, and sustaining peace through effective communication.
Job Purpose
The Public Information Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies to publicize priority issues and major events for the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Peace Operations (DPO). This involves coordinating efforts, producing diverse content, monitoring progress, and analyzing outcomes. The role requires proactive media outreach, including organizing press conferences and interviews, and managing relationships with media and key constituencies. Additionally, the incumbent will produce and oversee the production of various strategic communication materials such as press kits, releases, articles, and audio-visual content. The position also serves as a focal point for internal communications and provides guidance to junior staff, ensuring effective information dissemination and alignment with departmental objectives.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement communication strategies for priority issues and major events, coordinating efforts, producing content, and monitoring outcomes. Analyze current events, public opinion, and press coverage to advise management on appropriate responses. Undertake activities to promote media coverage, including developing media strategies, proactive outreach, arranging press conferences, and disseminating materials. Produce or oversee the production of strategic communication products like press kits, releases, articles, speeches, brochures, and audio-visual materials. Prepare drafts for newsletters and reports based on official documentation. Initiate and maintain professional relationships with key constituencies. Act as a focal point for internal communications, including managing iSeek content and coordinating with other departments. Provide guidance and supervision to junior staff.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Experience in media outreach, public messaging, and producing digital content (news stories, social media, audio-visual) is essential. Demonstrated experience in UN peacekeeping contexts and providing communications guidance is also required. Experience with French content creation is desirable.
