Organizational Context
This position is within the Policy and Best Practices Service of the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) in New York. The Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET) is mandated to develop and disseminate peacekeeping policy and doctrine. DPET also evaluates policy application, gathers lessons learned, and guides training development, fostering strategic cooperation with UN and external partners.
Job Purpose
The Coordination Officer will develop, implement, and maintain DPO's knowledge management and guidance systems. This involves evaluating programs, monitoring project development, and analyzing implementation to identify issues and recommend solutions. The role requires facilitating consultations and workshops with DPO components and peacekeeping missions to identify knowledge needs and support guidance uptake. The officer will research and analyze information from diverse sources, coordinate policy development, and prepare written outputs such as background papers and reports. Additionally, the position involves providing substantive support for meetings, coordinating outreach activities, conducting training, and participating in complex field missions. The role also supports the development and dissemination of DPO guidance materials and contributes to capturing and analyzing lessons learned from peacekeeping operations.
Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain knowledge management and guidance systems within DPO. Evaluate assigned programs and projects, monitoring and analyzing their development and implementation. Identify issues, liaise with relevant parties, and ensure follow-up actions. Design and facilitate consultations, workshops, and interactive processes with DPO components and peacekeeping missions to identify knowledge needs and support guidance uptake. Research, analyze, and present information from diverse sources. Coordinate policy development, including reviewing and analyzing issues and trends, and preparing evaluations or studies. Design data collection tools, analyze responses, and prepare conclusions. Prepare written outputs such as background papers, analysis, reports, and publications. Provide substantive backstopping for meetings and conferences. Initiate and coordinate outreach activities, conduct training workshops, and deliver presentations. Lead or participate in complex field missions, providing guidance and drafting mission summaries. Coordinate budget funding activities and prepare related reports. Support the development, review, and dissemination of DPO guidance materials, including policies, manuals, and standard operating procedures. Contribute to capturing, analyzing, and disseminating lessons learned and best practices from peacekeeping missions. Support the maintenance and strengthening of DPO knowledge management platforms and repositories.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in knowledge management, guidance development, policy support, organizational learning, or analytical report preparation is required. At least two years of experience specifically related to UN peacekeeping field missions in these areas is also required. Prior project or program management experience is necessary. Direct engagement with peacekeeping mission policy issues is desirable.
